What 90 euros actually buys
The standard full day is remarkably consistent across operators: pickup in Porto, roughly two hours of driving east, two winery visits with tastings, lunch, a short cruise on the river, and the drive back. Nine to ten hours door to door, of which a substantial part is the road.
That last point is the one to weigh. The Douro is about 100 km from Porto, but the roads into the valley are slow by design: they follow the river and the terraces. The tour is not selling you distance, it is selling you not having to drive those roads after two tastings.

The arithmetic turns on group size. For two people the gap over a group tour is roughly 170 to 280 EUR for the day. If there are four of you, price the private option properly before dismissing it; if there are two, it is a comfort purchase and worth calling it that.
Doing it without a tour
It is entirely possible to reach the valley independently. The Linha do Douro runs east from Porto to Pinhão with the river beside it for the final stretch, and that stretch is one of the reasons people come in the first place. We are not going to quote you a fare or a timetable here, because we have not verified either against the operator, and this site does not republish figures it cannot check.
What can be said without any figures is the shape of the choice. A tour buys three things at once: the drive, the quintas and lunch. The quintas are the part that is genuinely awkward alone, because they are spread across the slopes and generally expect a booking rather than walk ins. The train buys the landscape and nothing else.
So they are not really competing for the same day. If what pulls you is the view of the terraces, the train delivers it for a fraction of the price. If what pulls you is tasting in two estates without deciding who stays sober to drive back, that is what the 90 EUR is for.
