Things to do in Porto: five make every list, and three of them are free

There is no shortage of lists of things to do in Porto. We read six of the ones that rank for this search, end to end, and between them they run to about twenty thousand words. Four of the six do not contain a single price, and none of the six adds anything up.

So this page does the two things they do not. It counts how many of the six recommend each thing, which is the only honest way to say what the consensus actually is, and it puts the current price next to each one. The result is a shorter page than any of them, and it answers the question they leave open.

The five that make every list

Reading the six lists and counting mentions, these are the things that appear on every one of them:

• Livraria Lello, the bookshop
• Sao Bento station and its tiled hall
• The Ribeira waterfront
• The Dom Luis I bridge
• A day in the Douro valley

Two more appear on five of the six: the Clerigos tower and a port cellar across the river in Gaia. After that the agreement thins out fast: the Mercado do Bolhao and Foz are on four, the Palacio da Bolsa on three, a river cruise on two, and the Serralves museum on none of the six at all despite being the city's main modern art collection.

Three of the five are free

Of the five things every list agrees on, three cost nothing whatsoever: Sao Bento, the Ribeira and the bridge. You can walk into the station, along the quay and across both decks of the bridge without paying anyone.

Widen it to the eleven things that appear on at least two lists and 5 of the 11 are free. That is the single most useful thing to know before planning a few days here, and it is invisible in lists that do not carry prices, because a free thing and a 90 EUR thing look exactly the same in a numbered list with a photograph.

What the whole list costs

Cheapest published adult price. Clerigos and the Palacio da Bolsa read from each monument's own site on 24 September 2026; the rest from this site's own guides, each of which carries its own date. The Se cathedral appears on four of the six lists and is not priced here, for the reason given in the method.

Doing all eleven costs 163.95 EUR per adult. Doing only the five that every list agrees on costs 105.95 EUR. And if you take the Douro valley out of it, the whole recommended list of things to do inside Porto comes to 73.95 EUR.

The most expensive one is not in Porto

Every one of the six lists includes a day in the Douro valley among its things to do in Porto. It is a superb day and the consensus is not wrong. But two facts get lost when it sits at number seven in a list between a bookshop and a market.

It is not in the city. The cheapest full day tour runs about ten hours, most of it spent getting to and from the vineyards upstream. It is a day trip, and we measured what day trips from Porto actually cost in time in the guide to day trips.

And it costs more than everything else combined. At 90 EUR it is more than the other five paid entries added together, which come to 73.95 EUR. It is 85 per cent of the cost of the five unanimous things. We compared ten of those tours on price and on how much evidence sits behind each rating in the guide to Douro valley tours, and the spread is wide enough that the choice matters.

The six you pay for

These are the ones with a ticket, cheapest first, with what the price actually buys.

Two things in that table are worth a sentence each. The Palacio da Bolsa can only be visited on a guided tour of 30 minutes, with the time and language chosen at the ticket office, so it is not a building you wander around at your own pace. And the Clerigos tower sells a combined ticket with the Bolsa and the MMIPO museum for 25 EUR, against 24 EUR for the first two bought separately. The combination only saves money if you were going to the third one anyway.

The three you book, and the rest you just turn up to

Of the eleven things on this page, only three are bought online in advance: the Douro valley day, a guided run of the Gaia cellars and a river cruise. Clerigos and the Bolsa sell at their own ticket office, Lello sells its own timed ticket, and the other five are free. That is worth knowing because it means the planning burden is much smaller than a list of eleven suggests.

These prices are higher than the ones in the table above, and on purpose. The table gives the cheapest way to do each thing: 90 EUR is the cheapest full day in the Douro, 16 EUR is walking into one cellar on your own, 18 EUR is the short panoramic cruise. What follows is what each of our guides actually recommends after comparing the options on evidence, which is a different question and usually a dearer answer. Both numbers are real; they answer different questions.

The ticket you can get back

Livraria Lello is the one paid entry on the unanimous list, and its 15.95 EUR ticket is unusual: it is redeemable against a book. Buy a Livraria Lello Editions book on the way out and the ticket price comes off it, so the real cost of the visit can be zero if you were going to buy a book anyway.

There are four different tickets and the cheapest is 8.00 EUR, and the shop closes one day a year that catches people out. The detail is in the guide to Livraria Lello, which is the page on this site that goes deepest on a single entry price.

What the lists leave out

Counting what six lists include also shows what they skip. Three gaps stood out.

Serralves does not appear on a single one of the six. It is the city's main contemporary art museum with a park attached, and it is absent from every list we read. Whether that is a fair verdict or a blind spot we cannot say, because nobody here has been.

The beaches barely register. Foz makes four of the six, usually as a walk along the seafront, and the actual swimming beaches north of it get very little. Given that they are inside the metro network, that is an odd omission, and we measured why the water is the way it is in the guide to the beaches.

Nobody mentions what any of it costs. That is the gap this page exists to fill, and it is worth being explicit that it is not a small one: a reader following one of these lists has no way of knowing whether the day ahead costs ten euros or a hundred and sixty.

What this page does not tell you

This is a count of what others recommend, not a set of favourites. Nobody here has been inside most of these places, so there is no verdict on which is best. Specifically:

• No opinion on whether each one is worth it. The consensus column tells you what six travel writers thought, which is not the same thing.
• No queue or booking data. We have not measured waiting times at any of these, and they are a real cost.
• No price for the Se cathedral, which four of the six lists include. Its own site does not publish one accessibly and the first Google result is a reseller, so it is left out of the sums rather than guessed at.
• Prices are the cheapest published adult rate. Guided options, skip the line versions and family tickets all differ.

How this was counted

Six pages ranking for this search were read in full on 24 September 2026 and each was checked for every attraction, giving the count of how many lists include each one. Two of the ten results could not be retrieved and Reddit, which ranks fourth, is a discussion thread rather than a list, so it is not among the six.

Prices come from the most authoritative source available for each. The Clerigos tower and the Palacio da Bolsa were read on their own official sites on 24 September 2026: 10.00 EUR and 14.00 EUR respectively. The rest come from the guides on this site, each of which states the date its figures were checked. Where no official price could be found, as with the Se, nothing is published.

The totals are simple addition of the cheapest adult entry for each thing, with free entries counted as zero. They do not include food, accommodation or the metro fares to reach anything, and they are per person rather than per group.
