Quick answer:
  1. Six things behind one gate: contemporary art museum, 18 hectares of park, Art Deco villa, treetop walk, cinema house and the Siza wing.
  2. 24 EUR for all of it, 15 EUR for the park alone.
  3. Monday to Thursday after 17:00 it is also 15 EUR for almost everything. Same price as the garden.
  4. Under 12s free. Residents in Portugal pay 20, and nothing on the first Sunday of the month.
  5. 5.6 km from the centre and the metro does not reach it. Half a day, realistically.

Serralves is usually described as a museum, which undersells what you are buying a ticket to. It is a contemporary art museum, a park of 18 hectares, a pink Art Deco villa, a walkway through the treetops and a cinema house, on one site in the west of the city. The museum building is by Alvaro Siza and the foundation opened in 1989.

What is inside the gate

The museum holds the contemporary art, with the Alvaro Siza wing as a separate exhibition space. The park is formal gardens, woodland, a rose garden and a working farm, and it is the part most people actually come for. The Casa de Serralves is the 1930s villa, pink, and an Art Deco piece in its own right. The treetop walk is a raised walkway through the canopy, and the House of Cinema Manoel de Oliveira completes the set.

All six are covered by one ticket, which is the first thing that is not obvious from outside, and the reason the price question has a better answer than it looks.

The resident price is box office only. It is not sold online and not valid on combined tickets, and it needs a Portuguese citizen or resident card. Residents also get in free on the first Sunday of each month, which does not extend to visitors.

Entry is also free for members, for visitors with a certified disability rating of 60% or above plus one companion, and for BPI cardholders.

The 5pm ticket

From Monday to Thursday, from 17:00, with last admission at 18:00, the ticket is 15 EUR and includes the museum, the park, the villa and the House of Cinema.

The park on its own, at any other time, is also 15 EUR. So someone who wanted a walk in the gardens on a Tuesday afternoon is paying exactly the same as someone who turns up an hour later and gets the art as well. The difference between the two is the hour you arrive, not the money.

What it costs you is time. Last admission at 18:00 and closing at 18:00 on weekdays from October to March means the late ticket is a short, deliberate visit, not an afternoon. If your plan was two hours in the park and nothing else, the ordinary park ticket still makes sense. If your plan was the museum too, going late saves 9 EUR a head.

It is not in the centre

This is the part that decides whether it fits in your trip at all. Serralves is 5.6 km west of Aliados, which is 12 minutes by car and about an hour and ten on foot.

The metro does not reach it. The nearest station is Casa da Musica, and from there it is still 3.4 km, roughly 40 minutes walking or 9 by car. In practice that means a bus or a taxi at each end, and it is why a Serralves visit is a half day rather than an hour squeezed between two other things.

One thing that does work in its favour: it is 3.3 km from the Foz seafront, about 5 minutes by car, so it pairs naturally with an afternoon at the coast rather than with the old town.

Hours, and the two December dates

From October to March, the museum, villa, House of Cinema and park open Monday to Friday 10:00 to 18:00 and Saturday, Sunday and public holidays 10:00 to 19:00.

Closed on 25 December and 1 January. And the detail that catches people: on 24 and 31 December it closes at 16:00, with the last ticket sold at 12:30. Turning up at two o'clock on Christmas Eve means standing at a gate that is open but will not sell you a ticket.

What is on now

Four exhibitions are running as of 20 October 2026, which matters because the museum ticket is the same price whatever is hanging:

From the foundation's own programme, read 20 October 2026. Dates change.

The villa was closed to visitors from 21 September to 16 October. It has reopened, and the Lee Ufan show inside it opened the same week, so the Casa is worth the walk again.

Questions

How much does it cost to visit Serralves?

The general ticket is 24 EUR and covers the museum, the Alvaro Siza wing, the park, the treetop walk, the Art Deco villa and the House of Cinema. The park on its own is 15 EUR. Children under 12 go free. Read from the foundation on 20 October 2026.

Is there a cheaper way into Serralves?

Yes, and it is the detail worth knowing. From Monday to Thursday after 17:00, with last admission at 18:00, there is a ticket at 15 EUR that includes the museum, the park, the villa and the House of Cinema. That is the same price as the park on its own. Residents in Portugal also pay less at the box office, 20 EUR for everything and 12 for the park, and get in free on the first Sunday of each month.

Is Serralves worth visiting?

Nobody from this site has been inside, so this is the arithmetic rather than a verdict. What is defensible is that the common complaint about Serralves is the price, and that complaint mostly applies to the 15 EUR park-only ticket. For the same 15 EUR after 5pm on a weekday you get the museum and the villa as well, which changes the question from whether a garden is worth 15 EUR to whether a whole arts complex is.

How long do you need at Serralves?

Budget half a day, and most of the reason is the travel. It is 5.6 km from the centre of Porto, which is about 12 minutes by car and over an hour on foot, and the metro does not reach it. The park alone is 18 hectares. If you take the late ticket you have one hour of admission time, so that version is a focused visit rather than a leisurely one.

Can you get to Serralves by metro?

Not directly. The nearest metro is at Casa da Musica, and from there it is still 3.4 km, about 40 minutes on foot or 9 by car. Most visitors arrive by bus or taxi.

What are the opening hours of Serralves?

From October to March the museum, villa, House of Cinema and park open Monday to Friday 10:00 to 18:00, and Saturdays, Sundays and public holidays 10:00 to 19:00. The foundation closes on 25 December and 1 January. On 24 and 31 December it closes at 16:00 and the last ticket is sold at 12:30, which catches people out.
